EV Charger Grants in The Scottish Borders, Scotland 2026 - What Scottish Borders Homeowners Need to Know in 2026

If you’ve been putting off installing a home EV charger, it’s worth understanding what support is actually available in 2026—and whether you qualify.
The UK government continues to offer support through the Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant, administered by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV). While the scheme is more targeted than it once was, it still provides meaningful savings for eligible households.

What the grant covers
The EV Chargepoint Grant contributes towards the cost of having a home charger professionally installed.
Up to £350 per charge point
Covers up to 75% of installation cost (whichever is lower)
For context, a typical home EV charger installation in the Scottish Borders costs between £800 and £1,200, meaning the grant can cover roughly 30% to 40% of the total cost for those who qualify.
Who qualifies
The scheme is designed to support properties where installing a private charger is less straightforward. Eligible applicants include:
Renters with off-street parking and an eligible EV
Flat owners and those in shared ownership properties
Residents in buildings with communal or shared parking
Landlords installing chargers for tenants
There are also separate support schemes for businesses installing workplace chargers.
Important:
Homeowners who own a detached or semi-detached house with private off-street parking are not currently eligible for the domestic grant.
The smart charger requirement
To qualify, the charger must meet smart functionality requirements. This means it must be capable of:
Charging during off-peak periods
Receiving and responding to external signals
Being remotely controlled or adjusted
In practice, this is a benefit rather than a limitation. Smart chargers allow you to take advantage of EV-specific tariffs from suppliers such as Octopus Energy, where off-peak electricity can cost as little as 7–10p per kWh, compared to typical daytime rates of 22–28p per kWh.
For many drivers, this translates into £300–£600 per year in charging savings compared to standard tariffs—and significantly more when compared to public rapid charging.
At off-peak rates, a full 60kWh charge can cost under £6. The same charge on a public rapid network can exceed £30.
Why your installer matters
If you are eligible, the grant is applied directly through your installer—you do not need to claim it yourself.
However, the installer must be authorised under the OZEV scheme. This typically means they are certified through a recognised body such as NAPIT or NICEIC and approved to install grant-compliant equipment.
Using a non-authorised installer means:
You will not be able to access the grant
The installation may not meet required standards
There is also a safety consideration. EV chargers draw high electrical loads over extended periods, so correct installation, testing, and certification are essential.
Combining EV charging with solar
If you already have solar panels—or are considering installing them—an EV charger is a natural addition.
With a solar-compatible smart charger, your vehicle can be charged directly from your own generation during daylight hours, reducing grid reliance and lowering overall energy costs.
For households combining solar, battery storage and EV charging, total annual savings can reach £1,000 to £2,500, depending on usage patterns, driving habits and tariff optimisation.
Solar panels and batteries also currently benefit from 0% VAT across the UK (in place until at least March 2027), and interest-free funding is available in Scotland through the Home Energy Scotland loan scheme.
